Android device updates: Shield Android TV gains Plex server support, HTC pledges Nougat updates

01.07.2016
With the demise of the Nexus Player, the Nvidia Shield Android TV is your best option for Google-powered television and gaming.

The set-top box got some nice updates in a week that was slow on new software for existing devices, but saw big news with the announcement that Android N will be called Nougat.

Each week, we compile all the major software updates to hit the Android ecosystem, including phones and tablets on U.S. carriers, unlocked phones, Android Wear smartwatches, and Android TV devices. Making sure your device is running the latest available software is a good housekeeping practice, ensuring you have the latest features with fewer bugs and gaping security holes.

Shield Android TV: There’s a lot packed in to the version 3.2 update. The headline feature is support for Plex Server, which means you can stream any of your personal media to the set-top box. There’s also support for HDR (high dynamic range) Netflix, Vudu 4K videos, and several other under-the-hood improvements. The update is available now.

HTC 10, One A9, One M9: HTC used the news about Android Nougat to promise that three of its flagship phones would get Android 7.0 when it goes live.

HTC is also rumored to be working on two Nexus phones, so all that close collaboration with Google must be paying off.
