In the middle of its annual developer conference in Mountain View, Calif., Google let attendees get a closer-than-usual look at the autonomous car.
Google announced two years ago that it had built an autonomous car from the ground up. The vehicle has no steering wheel, brake or accelerator. And, for now anyway, the cars still have safety drivers riding in them as they are tested on highways and city streets.
At I/O, Google didn't allow people to ride in the car or even see it drive around as thousands of attendees milled about. This was more show than tell.
