The company has officially acknowledged that defective hardware is to blame, in particular loose contact between some components. LG issued the following statement to Android Authority:
The issue is apparently affecting numerous regional and carrier-branded units. It reached a fever pitch when a change.org petition was launched, asking LG to admit the problem and fix it.
The impact on you: If you have an LG G4 and you’ve experienced this issue, then you now have a way forward. Your first stop is the carrier if you have a branded model, otherwise reach out directly to LG support. It’s often best to document the issue as specifically as possible to ensure that the company will attribute the problem to your phone.
