Mingis on Tech: Forget killer robots; a self-driving car could get you, too

30.06.2016
Here's the scenario: It's 2022 and you're cruising along in your new self-driving car when it swings around a curve and bears down on a dozen people right in front of you on the road. If it swerves to save them, you die. If it saves you, well, it doesn't look good for the unlucky dozen.

What's the autonomous car supposed to do And who gets to decide -- you, the car manufacturer, some software coder or the feds

That's the topic Executive Editor Ken Mingis chews over in this episode with Senior Writer Lucas Mearian and Multimedia Editor Keith Shaw. The debate comes from new research that asked would-be autonomous car owners what they'd do. (Their answers, in a nutshell: It depends.)

From there, the discussion moves to robots and what happens when one breaks the First Law of Robotics and hurts you. Are pain-inflicting robots in our future
