We've also got a hands-on review of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium here.
Sony has skipped Quad HD altogether and trumped its rivals by releasing the first smartphone to boast an Ultra HD resolution. The Xperia Z5 Premium is coming soon and we've got all the details.
"Smartphones are part of people's lives" said Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO at Sony Mobile Communications. "Since users already create, share and enjoy most of their content on the go - we've set out to bring Sony's latest innovations in camera, design and display to ensure the Xperia Z5 series is the best possible lifestyle and entertainment platform."
The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium will arrive in November, a month later than the regular Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact which we assume is down to the manufacturing of the 4K display.
Like the other Z5 phones, Sony has said the 'pricing will reflect the premium quality of the smartphone' for the Z5 Premium. We think this will easily fetch over £600 and could be even more expensive than the Galaxy S6 Edge. When a specific date and price is announced we'll update this article.
Update: We now have a price from Clove which has put the Xperia Z5 Premium up for pre-order at £629 so our prediction was close.
The big headline feature of the Xperia Z5 Premium is the screen. It's the biggest Z range flagship phone we've seen at 5.5in and is more importantly the first 4K display in a smartphone so Sony wins that title.
You probably don't even have a 4K TV yet but the Xperia Z5 Premium is packing 2160x3840 on its palm-sized screen meaning a pixel density of 806ppi.
The design is similar to the other Z5 phones with IP68 waterproofing but the Premium offers a mirrored finish available in Chrome, Gold and Black.
As for other hardware and features, they are all the same as the regular Xperia Z5 so it's really the 4K display you're going to buy the Premium model for. This means it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, up to 32GB of internal storage, 3GB of RAM and a Micro-SD card slot for adding up to 200GB.
The two key new features of the Z5 range are also found on the Xperia Z5 Premium: a fingerprint scanner found inside the new power button and an upgraded camera - the first new one since the Xperia Z1. It's been bumped to 23Mp and Sony claims it has the fastest autofocus at 0.03 seconds, x5 Clear Image zoom and the best low light performance.
