Vodafone has also confirmed that it is recruiting the Executive Vice President of and Head of Networks of Ericsson Johan Wibergh as a replacement for Pusey. Wibergh joins in May 2015 to take part in a full transition to his role as CTO.
Pusey moved to Vodafone from Nortel in 2006 and was elected to the board in June 2009. As is typical of telecoms and media companies, Pusey was a customer product facing business technology leader whilst CIOs Albert Hitchcock, now CIO at media and publishing firm Pearson, focus on the operational technology and information.
In a statement Vodafone said Pusey had been instrumental in the expansion of Vodafone 3G services and its recent 4G services, now available in 15 countries. Pusey also worked on the global IT, procurement and cyber-security agendas at Vodafone and most recently was involved in Project Spring a global investment programme and the global convergence strategy following a series of fixed-line telecoms acquisitions, including Cable & Wireless, a UK based global organisation with a history dating back to the British Empire.
Vodafone Group Chief Executive Vittorio Colao said in a statement: "Steve has been an outstanding colleague who has made an immense contribution to Vodafone, and I would like to thank him for his wisdom, focus and commitment. He will leave as his legacy a business strongly placed for success as a result of his efforts, including most recently his leadership of Project Spring which is well on track and already delivering significant benefits for our customers.
"I would also like to welcome Johan to Vodafone: his background and skills are strongly complementary as we continue our transition to a global data company and I look forward to working with him closely."
Also in a statement Vodafone Group Chief Technology Officer Steve Pusey said: " I have worked with the best people in the industry and have made friendships that will last a lifetime. I will leave the Vodafone technology community in excellent hands and wish Johan every success."
Wibergh has led R&D, product management and sales during his career at Ericsson, an organisation he joined in 1996 when Ericsson and fellow Nordics Nokia dominated the mobile industry. He has experience of leadership in Brazil and the US and will report to CEO Colao.
Steve Pusey will also step down from the Board after the Vodafone Group Annual General Meeting on 28 July 2015 and will not stand for re-election.
