Skills shortage, the IoT, and Cloud are major challenges of the industry: CompTIA

25.09.2015
The IT skills gap in A/NZ, the increasing popularity of Cloud infrastructure, and the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) have been identified as three of the major challenges faced by the local IT industry, according to IT industry association, CompTIA.

CompTIA A/NZ community director, Moheb Moses, said CompTIA’s inaugural A/NZ channel community meeting (which was held in Sydney on August 18) raised a number of pressing concerns faced by channel players.

A survey carried out by CompTIA, following the event, revealed that skills gaps remain an ongoing challenge for most organisations. 96 per cent of respondents said that, overall, there was some level of skills gap between what the organisation needs from staff, and the skills that staff possess. Although 34 per cent of respondents indicated they were close to where they wanted to be with skills, 55 per cent said they were moderately close, and eight per cent of respondents said they were not at all close to where they want to be with skills in the company. Organisations reported to have experienced difficulty in recruiting candidates or retaining staff for sales roles (47 per cent) and IT and technical roles (36 per cent). Overall, 77 per cent of respondents said their organisations experienced difficulty in recruiting candidates or retaining staff for various positions. Other issues raised also included how channel partners can adapt to the increasing rates of Cloud migration, how they can identify new distribution channels as fewer physical products are being shipped, and whether the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) represents new potential business opportunities. Moses claimed this calls for the close examination of the skills gap in the A/NZ IT industry, how it is affecting business generally, and organisations serving the channel in the region. “CompTIA can help local IT channel organisations overcome the IT skills gap by connecting people who possess IT skills with those who want IT skills in the local market, and promoting collaboration among all stakeholders,” he added.
