Android device updates: Motorola starts Marshmallow soak test for Moto X Pure Edition

04.12.2015
Stockings are starting to fill with Marshmallows after a rather long November dry spell with very few Android software updates. The Moto X Pure Edition should get the full rollout in about a week depending on how the current soak test goes.

There are several other phones grabbing updates, so let’s get to the rest of the list. Each week, we compile all the major software updates to hit the Android ecosystem, including phones and tablets on U.S. carriers, unlocked phones, Android Wear smartwatches, and Android TV devices. Making sure your device is running the latest available software is a good housekeeping practice, ensuring you have the latest features with fewer bugs and gaping security holes.

Moto X Pure Edition: Motorola’s David Schuster announced on Google+ that a soak test is underway for this flagship. This means Marshmallow is being sent out to a test group of phones. If it all goes well, Schuster said the full rollout should begin for everyone else within a week. We’ll let you know here during our regular roundup and on the Marshmallow update list when that happens.

BlackBerry Priv: The company’s first Android phone is getting its inaugural software update. BlackBerry says you’ll see camera improvements, speedier software, and the December security update. BlackBerry is following the monthly update pattern established by Google and others after the Stagefright vulnerability. We’ll let you know if they follow through in January.

Galaxy Note 4: It’s not Marshmallow, but at least you’ll be caught up to Android 5.1.1 with your stylus-friendly phone. T-Mobile says that along with all the improvements to this version of Lollipop, you’ll get advanced messaging and video calling. However, keep in mind those features only work when corresponding with someone else on T-Mobile with a compatible device.

Galaxy Note Edge: Very similar story for the curved version of the Note, as you’ll also see Android 5.1.1 and the messaging and video calling features. Make sure you device has at least 50 percent battery life before triggering the over-the-air update.

Nexus 6: This edition of the Nexus 6 is a little late to the Marshmallow party, but at least it finally made it. According to T-Mobile, you’re getting pretty much a stock build of Android 6.0, with a couple of carrier-specific tweaks like support for Wi-Fi calling and the network’s LTE Band 12.

Huawei Watch: Be on the lookout for update LCB43B. Huawei says it’s a maintenance update, with improvements to the microphone for better “OK Google” detection, optimized fitness tracking, better Bluetooth connectivity, and a new app to display the battery level.
