The Yankee Group has classified technology in a new way: Core technologies are applications and integration technologies used to manage and automate internal business processes and functions. Edge technologies are applications and integration technologies used by enterprises to connect, coordinate, and collaborate with customers and business partners. Our research focuses on issues associated with the assessment, selection, and implementation of technologies that operate at the edge of the enterprise.

We have developed and apply an evaluation process for vendors that claim to provide edge capabilities. Future research notes and reports will identify edge-of-the-enterprise winners and losers.
