After a decade of waiting, there's a new Homeworld game coming
I say “sort of” because the game started its life as Hardware: Shipbreakers, a spiritual successor created by some former Homeworld devs at Blackbird Interactive. Gearbox recently gave the go-ahead for Blackbird to use the Homeworld license, and thus the name change.
Oh, also it’s kind of nothing like Homeworld because it takes place on a planet. Here’s the announcement trailer:
It’s interesting seeing the contrast of Homeworld’s obvious influences with such a different setting, ships whirling in formation across the sand dunes of Arrakis Kharak instead of through the vacuum of space. I’m not sure how it’ll play, given that so much of Homeworld relied on Z-axis movement, but you can’t slap the Homeworld name on something without arousing interest.
At least we won’t have to wait long to find out whether Deserts of Kharak does honor to the Homeworld name. The game will launch on January 20 of 2016, a.k.a. about a month from now.
